Kaßberg is one of the largest contiguous Art Nouveau and Wilhelminian-style districts in Europe.
Of course, you can delve much deeper into history on a guided tour of the Kaßberg. The Tourist Information Chemnitz will be happy to advise you on this. You can reach them on 0371/690680 or at info@chemnitz-tourismus.de.
Kaßbergstraße 36, Chemnitz
Kaßbergstraße 16 c, Chemnitz
1 - VILLA RICHARD HARTMANN
Kaßbergstraße 36
One of the city's most famous industrialists was
Richard Hartmann. He went down in history as the so-called "locomotive king"
and left behind
among other things, the factory owner's
villa built in 1868. This stately symbol
of the Hartmann empire served as a director's villa from 1890 to
1930 and has been used as a
youth centre since 1956.
2 - KARL-SCHMIDT-ROTTLUFF-GYMNASIUM
Hohe Straße 25
The former "Royal Grammar School" was
built in 1871/72 by district master builder Hugo Nauck in the style
of historicism. Among others, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Stefan Heym and Stephan
Hermlin went to school there. Right next door in the Kulturhaus
Arthur you can sit comfortably
in the evening in the bar "aaltra", have a drink and relax.
3 - OBERPOSTDIREKTION
Reichsstraße 11
This building from 1904 is a masterpiece
of Gothic façade ornamentation. Artful
glass mosaics, Saxon and Chemnitz coats of arms
as well as symbols of the post office and telegraphy refer
to the history of this building.
4 - MARIANNE-BRANDT-HAUS
Heinrich-Beck-Straße 22
The property, in which the Bauhaus artist Marianne Brandt lived from
1954 to 1976, was built in 1889 by Paul Doederlein in the neo-Renaissance
style. Today, the house houses the office
of the Marianne Brandt Society, which presents the artist's life and work in two gallery rooms
and presents it in a multifaceted
way.
5 - MAJOLIKA-HÄUSER
Barbarossastraße 48-52
The architect and building contractor Reinhold Siebert erected the
so-called "Majolika-Häuser" in 1897/98 as early Art Nouveau buildings
near the top of the Kaßberg. These town houses are
among the most striking buildings and are a showpiece of urban
architecture.
6 - HELENENHOF
W.-Oertel-Straße/E.-Mühsam-Straße/G.-Landgraf-Straße
The "Helenenhof" housing estate was built in 1926/27 by the cooperative
association of craftsmen and architects
and is regarded as a pioneering example of generous building in the
1920s.
7 - KYFFHÄUSERBURG
Hübschmannstraße 19
This ensemble was built in 1909/10 in the Wilhelmine spirit
of the time - with links to the Kyffhäuser legend. In the immediate
neighbourhood (Gustav-Adolf-Strasse 23-25) are the
so-called "fairy tale houses" in the Art Nouveau style.
8 - STEFAN-HEYM-HAUS
Hoffmannstrasse 58-60
The building in Hoffmannstrasse was built in 1912 with luxurious
apartments of up to 300 m² floor space. From 1919 to 1931
one of the most famous sons of the
city, the writer Stefan Heym, lived there on the ground floor.
The Kaßberg is not only popular for its architecture - it is also very popular as a place to live together. There are some exclusive shops and small shops here, such as the stationery shop Haamit. If you still have time after your tour or want to take a break in between, then stop in at Emmas Onkel. As cosy as a living room and as delicious as at grandma's: coffee, cakes, tea, but also small hearty dishes don't give small appetites a chance. And if it does get a little late, you are guaranteed to find the perfect end to your Chemnitz evening on the cocktail menu at Maroon.
